“MUZIK POP MALAYSIA (1975-1985) : MERAIKAN KEPELBAGAIAN” was the theme brought forward during the fifth edition of the Ipoh Music Symposium (IMS) held from 6-8 October. IMS 2023 explores the vibrant era of Malaysian pop music from 1975 to 1985, a time marked by significant diversity. This period saw the rise of multi-ethnic bands and artists such as Carefree, Alleycats, and Francissca Peter & Roy, who performed alongside renowned Malay singers like Sharifah Aini and Sudirman Haji Arshad. Western musical influences, including hard rock, disco, and blues, blended with local genres like nasyid and dangdut, reflecting Malaysia’s rich cultural tapestry. The symposium delves into how this diversity shaped Malaysia’s music scene, reflecting the nation’s evolving social and economic landscape.
